The studio's Portfolio preparation course is a part time course of two teaching groups attending two days per week over a 25 week period. It begins in late August and continues to mid March finishing just prior to the Art School portfolio submission date - the 14th of March each year.
To enrol each student is expected to hold the relevant certificate qualifications for an Art School application and present a body of work to show drawing skills, material use, investigative work, and areas of interests in the art field. Application to be made in April.
The coursework covers a range of activities based on first year work at art school. Students are taught how to explore ideas through a sketchbook, recording and documenting ideas to follow their thought processes. Shown how to test out ideas through the use of a number of processes like drawing construction, print and photography experimentation.
Students will work with two Tutors and follow a course directed by each of them. The Brief will be based on relevant source to create a rich inspirational response. It will be open to an individual response and can be directed to specific areas of artistic interests. Included in the course is a block of Life Drawing. These classes take place at the end of a course day from 5-7pm.
The Studio has a high success rate with many of the students being accepted for Art School. Most of the students tend to go to Glasgow School of Art with a few selecting to study in Art Schools like Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee, Edinburgh School of Art and Gray's of Aberdeen.
Many of our students have become practising Artists some with a reputation recognised internationally like Jim Lambie who was nominated in 2006 for the Turner Prize.
